27 November 2009 - 31 January 2010

A new exhibition of paintings by inmates at metropolitan prisons, featuring extraordinary indigenous works and for the first time works by juvenile offenders; notably:

From Banksia Hill Juvenile Detention Centre where art is a popular activity in the Education Programme. The works are by teenagers aged between 14 and 18 years from diverse backgrounds. Art is a new experience for many of the boys. Most have never participated in an art programme before. The teachers encourage the young artists to explore various art mediums and develop their natural talent. It is hoped that that the students will continue to express themselves through their art.

And from North Metro Youth Justice, Joondalup - paintings completed by a 16 year old indigenous female artist who held her own exhibition in 2008. 15 paintings were exhibited and all were sold. Her exhibition was held after the completion of her involvement in the Western Australian justice system, throughout which she was fostered and supported by her mentor. Mission Australia provided a venue for her to paint and exhibit.
