Part 5... the chapel.

Dominating the Main Cell Block is the Anglican Chapel, described as 'one of the finest and certainly the most intact of early prison chapels in Australia'. It is the only room in the Prison that does not have bars on the windows. On the wall behind the cross you will see large panels painted with the Lord's Prayer, Ten Commandments and Holy Creed. These were painted by a convict. He received time off his sentence for his good work.

The chapel roof is of particular interest. It is built from Jarrah cut in King's Park and floated down the Swan River. The laminated beams were a major engineering feat in their time.

Following the arrival of many Irish convicts one of the Association Rooms, designed to house 80 men, was converted into a Catholic Chapel and furnished with donations from local people.
