Urban design/land use
Results of the workshop held on 25 July at Fremantle Prison. Graeme Gammie opened the meeting, and Andrew Howe provided an overview of the Prison site from an urban design and land use perspective. The meeting then broke up into two groups, which brainstormed through the question: The results of the groups' thoughts are below. |

Relationship with the city is physical and visual
Reinstating connection:
Walls are part of the story and should not be removed, however re-open gates/bridge/re-open old openings.
Tunnels - fantastic opportunity
Avoid "Disneyland"

Balance between history/tourism
Integrated with other heritage convict sites (World Heritage Listing) - leads to funding/grants
Responsibility of the site to look after itself?Is the prison a romantic folly?

Vision and commitment:
The prison is in huge competition with a lot of fantastic other attractions
Needs to complement other attractions
More than 20 buildings - can they all be for tourism?
Bring other people on tho site to do things (other than tourism) - compatible uses
Create links to other sites - The Knowle, The Surgeon's Walk, The Convict Trail.
Guided and self guided
It will always be a tourism attraction
Open to the community for businesses - buildings need to be adapted appropriately

Summary
Helen - Beautiful buildings
Adele - get the community here; accessibility
Michael - views and vistas; ramp/gatehouse; main cell block
Agnieshka - balance of development is important; proper interpretation of site
May - maintain visual and physical links particularly ramp; sequence of events up to the prison
Richard - there needs to be something there - education, cultural events
Peter - Museums needs to be entertainment-conscious; to generate income and give a sample of what people went through.
