Fremantle Prison Heritage Precinct Master Plan

Urban design/land use

Results of the workshop held on 25 July at Fremantle Prison.

Graeme Gammie opened the meeting, and Andrew Howe provided an overview of the Prison site from an urban design and land use perspective.

The meeting then broke up into two groups, which brainstormed through the question:
"What are the issues relating to land use and the site's relationship to the surrounding urban fabric that need to be taken into account in the development of the Prison Master Plan?"

The results of the groups' thoughts are below.

Group 1 results

See attached mind map

Group 2 results

Relationship with the city is physical and visual
Reinstating connection:

Walls are part of the story and should not be removed, however re-open gates/bridge/re-open old openings.

Tunnels - fantastic opportunity

Avoid "Disneyland"

Transport

Balance between history/tourism

Integrated with other heritage convict sites (World Heritage Listing) - leads to funding/grants

Responsibility of the site to look after itself?

Is the prison a romantic folly?

Heritage site:

Vision and commitment:

The prison is in huge competition with a lot of fantastic other attractions

Needs to complement other attractions

More than 20 buildings - can they all be for tourism?

Bring other people on tho site to do things (other than tourism) - compatible uses

Create links to other sites - The Knowle, The Surgeon's Walk, The Convict Trail.

Guided and self guided

It will always be a tourism attraction

Open to the community for businesses - buildings need to be adapted appropriately

Parry Street Car Park

Henderson St - Signage
