Some Primary Sources

(A) Battye Library

  1. Newspapers
  2. Perth Gazette
    Inquirer
    Fremantle Herald

These newspapers are available on microfilm.

  3. Convict Department Records: Fremantle Gaol
  4. These are listed in detail in search guide AN258 under Accession Number 1156. Because many of them are stored in buildings elsewhere you will probably be required to fill out a call slip and allow 2 to 3 days for material to become available. The following are examples of the kinds of records to be found in this category:

Convict Registers – detailing prisoners’ records, and providing information about their experiences in the system (punishments, ticket-of-leave work etc. Record Nos. R.1-R.31.)

Letter Books (eg Supt. Lefroy to the Comptroller-General 1865-1869: Accession No 1156, C.32).
    Superintendent’s Order Books

Both these give details of the day-to-day running of Fremantle Prison and of the realities of convict experience.

Occurrence Books & Warders’ Journals (egs Reports & occurrences at the Mount Eliza Hiring Depot, 1852-68. Toodyay Depot 1859-66.)

Medical Registers & Hospital Occurrence Books 1855-74

  5. Fremantle Asylum. AN200/1. Accession No. 1120
  6. Eg. Admission Book 1857-1896 – this lists admissions, identifying individuals as ‘expiree’, ‘pauper’, ‘free’ ‘pensioner’.

  7. Convict System & Transportation
  8. Further Correspondence on the subject of Convict Discipline, Vols. 4-8, 343.2, 1849-1865

Includes Arrival Reports by the Comptroller-General, regulations for ticket-of-leave holders, Governor’s despatches and convict statistics, all of which were sent to the Secretary of State for the Colonies in London.

Annual Reports of the Convict Establishment 1865-1869

  9. Convict Ships
  10. The Wild Goose – manuscript periodical compiled on board last convict ship Hougoumont, 1868.

Gregg, J. Manuscript Journal of J. Gregg, carpenter on the convict ship York, 1862.

Saunders, Rice. Diary (warder on convict ship Lord Raglan, 1858).

Surgeon Superintendents’ Logs – for some of the convict ships (Public Records Office W A at LISWA – series MT. 32/1-3. AN 358).

Vol. 4. Select Committee on the provisions and operation of the act to substitute other punishment in lieu of transportation 1856.

Vol. 5. Royal Commission on Transportation & Penal Servitude, 1863. Report and evidence of Capt. Arthur Kennedy, Capt. E. F. DuCane, Maj. H. A. Sanford, Mr R. F. Newland, Col. E. Y. W. Henderson, Dean Pownall.

Reilly, J. T. Reminiscences of fifty years residence in Western Australia (1902)

Trollope, Anthony. Australia & New Zealand (1873)

There are papers associated with a petition by the convicts at Fremantle Prison complaining of Governor Hampton’s cruelty. They include Hampton’s answer and a list of convicts flogged in Western Australia 1851-1867. They are on micro-card and you need to ask for them at the Information Services desk.

(C) Court Records

For a list of the records in the Supreme court of Western Australia see C. T. Stannage, ‘Archival Note: Supreme Court of Western Australia’ in Studies in Western Australian History III, November 1978.
