Photography and Filming On Tour
You are most welcome to bring your still or video camera on any Prison tour.
The only place cameras are not permitted is in the underground section of the Tunnels Tour. Lockers are provided in the tunnels area for safe storage.
No electronic flash photography is permitted of the Prison’s art murals on interior walls.
This is consistent with the Prison’s conservation and preservation program for its interior art murals. Flash photography creates an intense burst of light that will eventually cause the paint to flake, resulting in accumulative damage to the art. Over time the works will deteriorate and fade.
Visitors are permitted to photograph art works without the electronic flash. Most digital cameras do not require the flash to be used.
No flash photography is permitted in the Visitor Centre, Convict Depot or Prison Gallery.
The taking of photos or filming should not impact on the smooth running of any tour.
Commercial Photography and Filming
All photography and commercial filming (including student fiilming projects) within the Fremantle Prison precinct should assist in promoting a strong, positive image of the Prison as one of Western Australia’s premier cultural heritage sites.
Filming and photography shoots should be carried out in a manner that does not compromise the fabric of the buildings or the day-to-day management activities. Filming requests are assessed on a case-by-case basis.
As Fremantle Prison is a World Heritage listed site approval for filming projects will only be given if the subject is relevant to Fremantle Prison itself.
**Please note, due to the extensive conservation project currently underway in the Main Cell Block no further filming projects will be considered until November 2010**
Procedure
Commercial photography and filming will require approval through the issue of appropriate authorisation, with the exception of news and current affairs items. Approval will be issued for a specific period of time and a fee will always be charged.
There is a need to ensure that the activities of film crews do not damage the buildings, conflict with guided tours, incorrectly present information or promote inappropriate activities. The safety of filmmakers and talent is very important, and as such, security is required at all times.
Conditions
The following conditions of approval shall apply:
- The Prison will be indemnified against liability for all claims that may arise as a result of filming.
- All fees must be paid seven days prior to filming.
- Clients are responsible for any damage caused during filming.
- As Fremantle Prison is a secured site, you will be required to be accompanied by security for the duration of your filming. This cost is included in our standard filming fee for any filming of three hours or less.
Other special conditions may apply before approval can be granted.
Filming Requests
Filming requests can only be considered for approval once your application form has been submitted. All applicants must agree to all filming conditions prior to approval.
