In the 1900s this space became a combined theatre, cinema, concert room and recreation hall. Movies or concerts were offered each Saturday and Sunday.

Visiting troupes as well as prisoners producing their own plays performed in the Crown Theatre. Singers and bands including Australians Johnny O’Keefe and Helen Reddy have performed there. After the 1988 riot, performances in the theatre were stopped.

Today, the Crown Theatre is well suited to theatre performances, product launches and presentations.

The Crown Theatre is attached to the Main Cell Block, therefore is not available for daytime hire or on Wednesday and Friday evenings.
