Forecourt of the Main Cell Block

The Fremantle Prison Heritage Precinct Master Plan proposed the Forecourt of the Main Cell Block be retained and conserved as the primary open space of the precinct, providing an impressive setting for the Main Cell Block and unique spatial experience for visitors.

To enable visitors to experience this unique and impressive forecourt and to emphasis this important space, the Master Plan recommended that increased public access be encouraged, and its utilisation for special events and as a performance space by removing planter beds and providing a smooth flexible surface (combination of grass and paving).

The planning for this project is still proceeding. Work is not expected  to commence before 2012/13.  In the meantime it is intended to trial different hard surface types to determine what will be the best solution for the existing pathways in this important and austere space.  An opportunity will be provided for community consultation as plans are developed.
