Conservation Management Plan

Fremantle Prison: Conservation Management Plan, Revised February 2010

In 2008 the 'Fremantle Prison: Conservation Management Plan, December 2008' was released to provide a guide for the use and care of the Fremantle Prison site.

The Plan is a guide for best maintenance and advice for procedures prior to future works. It recognises the constraints and requirements of the Fremantle Prison site to offer compatible development strategies that enable site significance and context to be retained, and in some cases partially recovered.

The Plan was prepared by Palassis Architects.   The development of the Plan included a review of the various conservation documents that had been prepared since the Prison’s closure, and updated the policies where appropriate.  The Plan was developed with regard to the State, National, and potential World Heritage values of the site.

This Plan replaces the 'Fremantle Prison: a policy for its conservation' produced by James Semple Kerr in 1992.

In February 2009 the Department of Housing and Works was split with the Works function, which Fremantle Prison is a part, being transferred to the Department of Treasury and Finance; creating the Building Management and Works Division.

To reflect the change of management the 'Fremantle Prison: Conservation Management Plan, December 2008' has been revised to remove all references to the Department of Housing and Works and replace it with the Department of Treasury and Finance – Building Management and Works Division.
